In a nation groping in the dark for moral clarity and historical truth, David Barton’s powerful lecture, “America’s Godly Heritage: Historically Illiterate,” delivered at Waldheim Park (2400 S. Hall Street, Allentown, PA 18103), offers a spiritual jolt to the collective memory of America. This revelatory session—graciously gifted to the community by Dr. Kathy Ott of Whitehall, PA—uncovers the deeply biblical and providential foundations of America’s birth while exposing the alarming erosion of historical awareness in modern culture.

Barton opens with sobering commentary on the nationwide destruction of statues and monuments—including those of abolitionists, black heroes, and emancipators—arguing that this behavior reveals a profound level of historical illiteracy. He illustrates how figures like Frederick Douglass, Lucy Higgs Nichols, Ulysses S. Grant, and members of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment are wrongly vilified and erased from public memory due to modern ignorance and distorted narratives.

Through vivid storytelling and documentation from over 100,000 original sources, Barton brings to life the forgotten moral and spiritual backbone of America. He introduces often-overlooked Founding Fathers such as Benjamin Rush, Francis Hopkinson, Gouverneur Morris, and Charles Thomson—many of whom were ministers, hymn writers, Bible printers, and abolitionists. Far from being secular deists, these were men of fervent faith who believed that civil law must rest on divine law, that education must be infused with Scripture, and that liberty was impossible apart from morality and religion.

Barton highlights how America’s Constitution, the longest-running in the history of the world, was crafted with biblical principles at its core—separation of powers, republican government, and the rule of law all grounded in scriptural precedent. He demonstrates that the overwhelming majority of quotations used during the founding era came from the Bible, not from Enlightenment thinkers.

As he closes, Barton issues a passionate warning: when a people forget who they are and where they came from, they become vulnerable to deception, division, and decay. Quoting Psalm 11:3, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”—he challenges citizens to return to the spiritual and moral moorings that once made America the most exceptional and blessed nation on Earth.
